Types of Cargo Packaging That Keep Your Product in Perfect Condition

When you don’t use the right type of cargo for your product packaging, your product remains at risk of damage during the shipment process. So the rule is simple, use the right packaging for the right product that guarantees product security and safety over long distances by sea, air, or land. For the same purpose, you need proper guidance to understand the types of cargo packaging that help you to choose the best cargo packaging for your products.

Let’s explore further the essential types of cargo packaging that keep your product in perfect condition over long-distance shipment.

  1. Corrugated Packaging

Corrugated boxes are the most popular cargo packaging that is made from wood fibers. These boxes are available in two colors white and brown paperboard. White corrugated boxes are used for the transition of products that are sensitive to light. On the other hand, brown paperboard boxes are recyclable and commonly employed for food and other items. For heavy products like furniture double-walled corrugated boxes are used.

If your product is fragile such as glass, or porcelain that needs more protection, you can use double boxes and fill the gaps by using void fillers.

2. Bagged Cargo Packaging

The main objective of bagged cargo packaging is to keep the product in place. These bags are not designed to resist external forces and are usually transit by trains, trucks, or planes.  Bagged packaging is suitable for products like fertilizers, grains, dried fruits, coconut, coffee, resins, etc.
3 . Wooden Cases Packaging

Wooden cases are made of high-quality wood like mahogany, or oak which are more versatile and durable boxes used in cargo packaging. You can use these cases to pack heavy machinery, art, and electronics. Wooden cases are lightweight and stackable which means you need lesser space to transport this packaging. However, these cases have a disadvantage that they are difficult to find.

4. Wooden Crates Packaging

Wooden crate packaging is made of plywood or lumber that is used as packaging for shipping oversized and heavy products. As these crates are held together with nails and screws, you can also customize their shapes and sizes according to your need. Wooden crates are usually employed for packing appliances, furniture, machinery, etc.
5. Steel Drum Packaging

If your product is in liquid forms such as oil, or chemical, you can use steel drum packaging to transport it safely. They are formed in a cylindrical shape and have 55 gallons of capacity. Steel drums are welded efficiently so the chances of leakage of your product are lower. The best thing about steel drums, they can be repurposed and used multiple times.
6. Bales Packaging

In the case of bales packaging, products are compressed and wrapped in water-resistant plastic material. These types of packaging are commonly used for straw, hay, paper, wool, cotton, etc. Bales are not only stackable but also cost-effective packaging that is commonly transported via truck, train, and ship.

7. Palletizing Cargo

Palletizing cargo is a great way to optimally use space in the container that is helpful in transporting more products at once. Pallets are stacked on each other and are easy to move so you can simply load and unload your products safely. The sizes of these pallets vary according to the region as in North America the standard size of a pallet is 40” x 48”.
8. Containers

Containers are intermodal types of packaging that are used across various modes of transportation such as in ships, trains, and trucks. For perishable goods, you can use a refrigerated container that will control the temperature to slow down the decaying process of the product. While dry containers are used for nonperishable products.

Conclusion

Every product has its specification that must be addressed by using the same sort of packaging during the transportation process for safety. For instance, if your product is more fragile and delicate, you can use double corrugated boxes for packaging and fill the voids for more protection. Other cargo packaging options are also available such as wooden cases, steel drums, containers, etc. which you choose according to the need of your product.
